Google have been very busy rolling out major updates over the last couple of weeks, releasing four significant updates.
Google have been very busy rolling out major updates over the last couple of weeks, releasing four significant updates. On the 27th of September we had the Panda Update. This was shortly followed by the EMD Update on the 28th. October began with the Penguin Update on the 5th and most recently, on the 9th of this month we had the Page Layout Update. Back in May, I wrote a post about the Penguin 1.1 update and how it would be refreshed like the Panda update. However, it turns out that the Penguin changes have been a lot less frequent than Panda refreshes - which happen on a monthly basis. To reiterate the aim of the Penguin update, it was to target webspam in an attempt to reward high-quality sites and to decrease rankings for sites that Google believed were violating the existing quality guidelines.
Matt Cutts made his usual weather report tweet:
@mattcutts: "Weather report: Penguin data refresh coming today. 0.3% of English queries noticeably affected. Details: goo.gl/AF5kt"This is the second Penguin refresh since it was rolled out six months ago, last April:
- Penguin — April 24, 2012 - impacted an estimated 3.1% of English queries
- Penguin 1.1 — May 25, 2012 – impacted <0.1% of English queries
- Penguin 3 — October 5, 2012 - impacting 0.3% of queries
