I am relatively new to Twitter.  I historically thought it was just the annoying status updates that Facebook had but without the ability to see how fat and haggard your “friends” had got since you last saw them in the flesh. Since joining however I am regularly amused by several of my favourite comedians who have started a campaign to subvert some marketing that Fosters is carrying out since they took over from Perrier as the sponsors of the Edinburgh Fringe.

Stuart Lee the co creator of Jerry Springer the Soap Opera decided whilst drunk that he would object to the fact that Fosters are hosting The Foster’s Comedy God poll, which invites the public to vote for the all-time Comedy God from 30 years of Perrier/Eddies/Edinburgh Comedy Awards nomination.  Foster’s had emailed him as he had been involved with the Fringe for several years. He objected on the grounds that whoever would win would be most popular at the time, such as Michael Macintyre, which would associate Fosters with a popular name and give them free advertising which is not really the spirit of the Fringe.  Also none of the 300 performers were asked if they minded being in the poll which is especially relevant for people like Steve Coogan who distanced himself when Nestle were sponsors. Feeling this poll was not in keeping with the spirit of an arts festival he picked one of the most obscure acts, The Frank Chickens who are a Japanese female performance art duo, and said that they should win in a reply email to Fosters.  He had however accidently hit reply all in the email and now this mantle has been taken up by several other comedians including Richard Herring who are all Tweeting to their followers to vote for Frank Chickens. The Frank Chickens are now leading the poll with over 25% of votes so far and Foster’s have responded by changing the voting method several times.  The Tweets keep coming though and update faster than the website with links on how to vote for this little known act. Foster’s were hoping to be aligned with a big name by this campaign but it looks like they will be keeping with the spirit of this often money losing festival and the sponsorship prize will go to someone who needs it rather than someone who has already made millions.
