Industry News, SEO, Yahoo

yahoo-advert-1The 28th September 2009 saw the launch of Yahoo’s latest campaign to win back our hearts and ultimately get us to use its redesigned portal (http://uk.my.yahoo.com) where customisation is key. This global ad campaign is now in full swing with billboards in place all over the country (and probably the world) as well as banner, skyscraper and video ads on the Web and TV commercials across major channels.

So it’s time to take a critic look and gauge whether this new campaign is going to hit the mark.

The Microsoft / Yahoo deal. What does it all mean?

Bing, Google, Industry News, Microsoft, Yahoo

With details of the deal between Microsoft and Yahoo now well and truly publicised (I even saw a piece in The Sun where a page 3 model was discussing what she liked about Bing), it is time to take a look at exactly what this means for the future of UK search, Yahoo and Bing.

29th July 2009 saw confirmation of a deal between Microsoft and Yahoo that will result in Microsoft taking ownership of Yahoo’s search activities for the next 10 years. Unlike past attempts to strike a deal with Yahoo from Microsoft and Google, this deal will see no upfront payments to Yahoo in favour of a revenue share model, instead Yahoo will receive 88% of the revenue from ad sales from its own sites for the first 5 years. Although still vulnerable to government regulators (a fate that ended the previous attempt at a Google / Yahoo partnership) the deal looks likely to stick and will have an impact across both businesses and search as a whole. RIP Overture Keyword Suggester ?

Monday, September 17th, 2007

Digital Marketing, Keyword Research, SEO, Yahoo

The fact that Yahoo have ceased to update their Overture keyword suggestion tool has been known for several months. Overture US was last updated in January 07 and the UK data was last refreshed in May 07 and Yahoo have officially commented on their termination of support for the tool.

This morning however, it seems that the tool has become completely defunct as no terms return any search results. Does this mean the tool is officially dead ? Either way this throws a serious issue for the little guys who relied on the fact the Overture tool was free.

So what now ?

With Wordtracker now using UK data there is now a solid alternative at a cost. £15 per week / £29 per month / £149 per year. Having now used this tool with the UK data (I wouldn’t have recommended it to the UK market prior) I can say it is a sound investment and the billing structure makes it accessible to both big and small whether you want to cram all your keyword research into a single week or have the tool on hand all the time.

That being said, I for one would like to see the Overture tool reborn as it provided another angle to compare with Wordtracker and the more thorough you can be with your research, the better the results.
