It has slipped by relatively unnoticed, but on Wednesday (August 3 2011), Yahoo’s organic search results in the UK changed to be powered by Bing. This brings the total number of countries where Yahoo is Bing-powered to 17; this is another stage of the deal struck by Microsoft and Yahoo back in 2009. (more…)

World Stores – Highlighting Google’s Flawed Ranking Algorithm
Friday, April 1st, 2011E-Commerce, Google, Link Building, Microsoft, SEO, Yahoo
I read an interesting article on the BBC website yesterday: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/rorycellanjones/2011/03/world_stores.html
It appears that an innovative entrepreneur in Twickenham has spotted that all you need to do in order to achieve a high ranking in Google is to buy a domain with the target keyword in it.
OK, it’s a little more complicated than that. For those not in the know, here’s how it works…
Google wants to display relevant websites, and two of the key things that they look at are the number of links to a website (which shows how ‘important’ the site is), and what the anchor text says (the text on the link to the website, which tells Google what the page is talking about).
But clearly this system can be gamed – if you want to rank for a keyword, all you have to do is to buy huge numbers of links, and use the same anchor text. Google has all kinds of checks in place to make sure that this doesn’t work – if all of your links have the same anchor text, Google will ignore them and possibly penalise you. (more…)
Yahoo’s Answer to Google Instant: Search Direct
Thursday, March 24th, 2011It was announced yesterday that Yahoo released its very own version of ‘Google Instant’ called ‘Search Direct.’
The newly launched search product is currently in beta, and aims at providing the users with fast and efficient information and an easier search process. In a press release, Yahoo explained that ‘Search Direct’ goes way beyond listings of hyperlinks; it can detect and predict queries just like a decision engine (excuse the pun). It is all about Answers, not instant links. “Search Direct is evidence of Yahoo! continuing to lead innovation in search, enabling people to take action faster, find what is most important, and sample what is possible with the next stage of search technology,” said Yahoo Senior Vice President of Search and Marketplaces Shashi Seth. It is also undeniable that we all rely on Search Engines (Google more precisely) to give us the right and correct answers to all of our queries. We hear of search algorithms being improved and refined on a daily basis or Search Engines releasing applications and gadgets to impress us and gain more monopoly. For the Search Engines, it is all a question of market share. (more…)
Yahoo Kills a Web Classic and Potentially Wastes Millions of Dollars
Thursday, October 29th, 2009Industry News, Link Building, SEO, Yahoo
After confusing the world with their seemingly meaningless latest ad campaign, Yahoo made another huge blunder this week after shutting down the long running Geocities website without paying any attention to some SEO basics, and potentially wasting millions of dollars in the process.
Geocities had been around since around 1995 and offered its users a free place to host their website. At its height, Geocities was the MySpace/Blogger.com/Wordpress.com of its day, leading to Yahoo purchasing the site for $3.57 billion in stock (yes that’s $3.75 billion!) back in January 1999.
