Using ORM Designer with Symfony 2

We’ve just started using the Symfony 2 framework along with its Doctrine 2 ORM extensions to write some of our new web tools. I was able to get a free trial of ORM designer, a visual tool to aid in design of the data model. I have not been disappointed with my experience so far. (more…)

The web can be a wondrous but wandering place at times. In a spiralling carousel of business like the one we are a part of, beauty changes. Beauty gets better, and what was once beautiful becomes dull, disengaging and flat. Users merely expect the beauty of old now, which makes creating modern beauty more challenging. Responsive web design – a fantastic and booming trend in the current landscape of website design. The entire industry is set alight with excitement by the whole thing – squeezing, bloating, squelching their browser windows- to see the goods placed in front of them reshape, restructure and in some cases, remove themselves entirely. I’ve been consistently tasting a bitterness and anger which to be honest, I’m getting a little tired of feeling as though I cannot express, and I am not alone. (more…)

Fonts, The Hidden Pricing Model!

Paying for a cufon license to use fonts on a website is something I have never quite understood or accepted. Up until now however the amounts of money have been relatively small and due to this I have just grumbled about it and ultimately paid for it. I was about to go through this process again but it didn’t seem as straightforward as usual and rather than handing over credit card details for a minimal charge I was asked for the website URL and amount of anticipated traffic. I was of course, bewildered by this and questioned why this would be applicable when the fonts are not hosted for us? Surely when buying a font it shouldn’t matter, if it was for something such as a brochure or leaflet the price would not be dependent on the amount of brochures produced! (more…)
